The Indian government’s push for local telecom manufacturing, driven by the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, is set to significantly boost entry-level job opportunities and enhance the development of skilled manpower, according to the Centre. This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of inclusive and collaborative policy-making.
During a recent meeting with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the telecom sector, Union Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia emphasized the government’s dedication to fostering an industry-friendly environment. He stressed the importance of timely resolution of industry challenges and the simplification of processes to support business operations.
The meeting was part of the newly-formed Stakeholders Advisory Committee (SAC) with telecom OEMs, where discussions focused on promoting indigenous manufacturing, implementing practical strategies, improving ease of doing business, and addressing issues raised in previous meetings.
Industry leaders outlined ambitious yet achievable growth targets for the telecom sector. The SAC expressed confidence that the development of local telecom manufacturing would not only create more entry-level jobs but also help build a skilled workforce.
“The initiative will be critical in engaging industry leaders in expanding and shaping the future of India’s telecommunications ecosystem,” stated the Ministry of Communications.
Industry representatives also pledged to collaborate closely with the government to advance the growth of the telecom sector both domestically and internationally. Minister Scindia assured them of full government support in addressing their concerns and encouraged the sharing of best practices from other countries.
Under the PLI scheme, telecom equipment manufacturing sales in India have surpassed Rs 50,000 crore, creating over 17,800 direct jobs and numerous indirect jobs. The Ministry reported that telecom equipment production has exceeded Rs 50,000 crore, with exports reaching approximately Rs 10,500 crore.
To facilitate ongoing dialogue between the government and the telecom sector, the Minister has established six distinct SACs, aimed at providing valuable insights to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) on various matters.
