Tata Electronics’ iPhone manufacturing plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, is set to begin production in November, according to a report citing sources. This 250-acre facility will be Apple’s fourth assembly plant in India and Tata Electronics’ second dedicated to the production of the tech giant’s flagship smartphone.
Sources indicate that preparations are well underway, with enclosures produced at Tata’s components factory, established in 2021, already being used in some iPhone models assembled in India and exported to China. The facility is expected to employ 50,000 blue-collar workers, the majority of whom will be women. Once fully operational, it will be the second-largest Apple iPhone facility in Tamil Nadu, following Foxconn’s plant in the region.
Neither Apple nor Tata Electronics responded to queries regarding the upcoming plant. However, sources revealed that equipment and production lines are currently being stress-tested to meet the anticipated high demand.
A report from earlier this year highlighted that the Hosur facility aligns with Apple Inc.’s strategy to expand its manufacturing footprint in India. The report also mentioned that the plant is expected to house around 20 assembly lines and employ approximately 50,000 workers within the next two years, with full operations projected to commence within 12-18 months.
The new facility is expected to strengthen Apple’s efforts to localize its supply chain and deepen its partnership with Tata. Currently, Tata oversees an iPhone manufacturing unit in Karnataka, which it acquired from Wistron Corp. This shift in manufacturing aligns with Apple’s broader strategy to diversify its operations beyond China by establishing partnerships in India, Thailand, Malaysia, and other regions.
According to a Wall Street Journal report from December 7, Apple and its suppliers aim to produce over 50 million iPhones annually in India within the next two to three years, with plans to increase production by tens of millions of units in subsequent years.
Tata has been actively expanding its collaboration with Apple, moving beyond its traditional sectors like salt and software. The company has increased employment at its existing Hosur facility, focusing on producing iPhone enclosures, and has outlined plans to open 100 retail outlets dedicated to Apple products. Meanwhile, Apple has already launched two stores in India and has plans for three more.
